Currently volume snapshot operation in Apache CloudStack over VMware hypervisor is very slow, which is one of the pain points for the cloud operators which is not yet addressed. Per current design, the volume snapshot is a full snapshot which is exported by ESXi host to secondary storage mounted by SSVM(secondary storage VM) appliance. The way the copy/backup to secondary storage is handled currently is not efficient now due to the use of OVF export that is throttled on Vmware side and single processor bound. Some of the techniques used by backup systems might be used e.g. using VMware vStorage API that backs up and restores vSphere virtual machines efficiently. Using them will allow capturing VM state much more efficiently and faster. Priyank will present the performance enhancements for volume snapshot operation, per new design, in Apache CloudStack deployed over VMware hypervisor.
