Managed storage, while not new to CloudStack, has been evolving over the past four years at a quick pace.

In a nutshell, managed storage provides you with the ability to map a single virtual disk to a backend volume (as opposed to having multiple virtual disks share a backend volume).

There are many benefits to this approach, including the following:

1) Being able to guarantee performance to a virtual disk in a shared storage infrastructure (if the backend volume is capable of this).

2) Being able to create and leverage fast and space-efficient snapshots (snapshots that reside on the backend primary storage system (possibly de-duped and compressed) instead of having to be copied to secondary storage).

Come learn about how this is implemented for XenServer, vSphere, and KVM and what role this could play in your data center.
