Apache Mynewt is an operating system for constrained embedded systems based on 32-bit microcontrollers. With a small, pre-emptive RTOS at the core and an extensive set of modules for connectivity, file systems, power and performance management options and more, it is a highly flexible, responsive, general purpose OS for constrained devices. It is built for easy portability to different MCU architectures and standards-based interoperability with other systems. Several features such as secure bootloader, image management, hardware abstraction, instrumentation for stats and logs etc. simplify going from prototype to production while incurring minimal technical debt. After an overview of the system, the talk will enumerate the benefits of an open-source approach for such a project and the flexibility afforded by the Apache License for developing commercial-grade products based on Mynewt.
