PGP Key Signing: Expanding the Web of Trust
Why participate in the key signing? Among other things, all Apache releases are PGP-signed; but a key with no signatures attesting to its own authenticity isn't very useful. Bring your key (which you will have emailed to our special address at apachecon-keysigning@apache.org), and sign. You will need a pen, and some manner of identification.

Please see the wiki page for more information:

How to Become an IoT Developer (and Have Fun!) - Justin Mclean, Class Software
I started off my life as a developer writing machine code and C and working on some low level hardware projects. Then this thing called the internet come along and I moved into the web application space for a couple of decades. More recently I've moved back into commercial IoT development and not unexpectedly a lot has changed over that time.

In this talk I'll cover what it's like developing IoT projects. I'll go over the tools you need and protocols you need to be familiar with. I'll look at how the C language has evolved to what it is today and and how to write code that works well on memory constrained devices. I'll go over producing prototypes, rapid development, debugging and testing embedded applications and what and how much electronics you should learn.

In short everything you need to know in becoming an IoT developer and have fun doing it.

Writing BLE Apps for Apache Mynewt is a Snap in the ASF Ecosystem - Aditi Hilbert, Runtime, Inc.
The high performance and highly configurable BLE 4.2 stack in Apache Mynewt addresses a wide range of consumer and commercial use cases. Using a few example applications, the talk will show how the stack enables these use cases and the process of building such applications. It will then explore how to leverage other projects in the ASF such as Apache Cordova and Apache FlexJS to make it simpler to write feature-rich BLE applications that communicate with boards operating on the Apache Mynewt OS.

Building SCADA Systems with Apache Software - Christofer Dutz, codecentric AG
SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) are the heart of every larger industrial plant. These systems can be considered their central nerve system. They collect data from all sorts of industrial controllers and sensors and manage how each part works together. Maybe the throughput of machine A, B and C should be reduced because one of the systems down the production-line reported problems. Not only do these systems have to react fast, they also have to provide the means for visualizing the state of the system and problems that might be occurring.

The SCADA systems market is almost completely handled by proprietary commercial software. In this talk I would like to propose my vision on how we could start building more intelligent SCADA systems using our existing Apache stack of tools. Making it possible for even small businesses to afford such systems.

An Apache Based Intelligent IoT Stack for Transportation - Trevor Grant, IBM
Modern engines are equipped with sensors which improve fuel efficiency, safety, reliability, and other functions. Many commercial IoT stacks address this problem, organizations which require additional customization must pay or to attempt to build their own system. Using Apache Software Foundation projects, the building blocks required to build such a system are already in place; organizations have an alternative to commercial products for their use cases.

In this talk we will show how vehicle telemetry data from and ODB2 sensor can be handled by an Apache Kafka broker, ingested by a stream processor such as Apache Flink, which can leverage the tensor math library Apache Mahout to create an online deep learning algorithm for prediction and prevention of failure with fault warnings, and thus reduce warranty claims.

Secure Software Upgrade for Microcontrollers - Fabio Utzig, Runtime, Inc.
The ability to execute software updates over the air on a microcontroller-based device ensures a cost-effective deployment with full lifecycle support. The presentation starts with the design considerations for the secure bootloader included in the Apache Mynewt OS. It then walks the audience through the operational flow of the bootloader, emphasizing detection and recovery mechanisms for erroneous or inconsistent states. Next, security features such as checking the authenticity and integrity of the firmware images, tools to digitally sign images, secure storage options etc. will be discussed. Finally, the specific implementation details to address the challenges of managing upgrades on constrained devices will be presented.

Data Modeling for IoT - Jayesh Thakrar, Conversant
A common theme in the IoT space is the need for large volume data streaming, ingestion and storage, and post-ingestion processing and analytics all of which depend on an efficient, scalable and well-performing data model.

With intelligent transportation picking up traction as an IoT showcase, this presentation will take the usecase of vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) data exchange for intelligent vehicle systems, and walk through a high level data schema and datastore design approach to support billions of vehicles and hundreds of billions of daily data events. It should be noted that at these volumes, effective and efficient schema-level indexing is not practical.

The proposed design borrows a page from the venerable Unix Filesystem inode structure and can be implemented on datastores like Apache Cassandra and Apache HBase.

Building an IoT Platform with Apache Apollo and Apache Geode - Swapnil Bawaskar, Pivotal
In IoT use cases, the devices are MQTT clients that publish information to an MQTT broker. To handle billions of devices, MQTT brokers can be scaled horizontally, but it is difficult to scale the subscribers that process this information. In this presentation, Swapnil Bawaskar will discuss how Apache Geode can be used to scale the subscribers that stand behind Apache Apollo as the MQTT broker.

Apache Ignite and Apache Spark: This is Where Fast Data Meets the IoT - Denis Magda, GridGain Systems Inc
It's not enough to build a mesh of sensors or embedded devices to get more insights about the surrounding environment and optimize your production. Usually, your IoT solution should be capable of transferring enormous amounts of data to a storage or cloud where the data has to be processed further. Quite often, the processing of the endless streams of data has to be done almost in real-time so that you can react on the IoT subsystem's state accordingly and in time.

During this session, Denis will explain and demonstrate how to build a Fast Data solution that will receive endless streams from the IoT side and will be capable of processing the streams in real-time. In particular, you will learn the following:

- Data streaming to an Apache Ignite cluster from embedded devices powered by Apache Mynewt.
- Real-time data processing with Apache Spark and Apache Ignite.

Apache Flink® and IoT: How Stateful Event-Time Processing Enables Accurate Analytics - Aljoscha Krettek
Apache Flink® is an open-source stream processing framework for distributed and accurate data streaming applications. An increasing number of IoT use cases will (and some already do) require robust processing frameworks that can handle an ever-increasing amount of data and provide insights in real time. Apache Flink is one of the contenders for the top spot among such frameworks and in this presentation Aljoscha Krettek will highlight some of the properties that make Flink so well suited for IoT use cases: We will first learn what stream processing frameworks in general provide before diving into stateful stream processing and event-time based stream-processing. We will see why these two features are important for IoT scenarios and also why they, together with Flink’s robust handling of failures, enable accurate and robust analytics on real-time streaming data.

The Fey Engine - A Component Based Processing System for IoT - Barbara Malta Gomes & Tony Faustini, Litbit
Apache iota - in incubation - is a SMACK stack (Spark, Mesos, Akka, Cassandra, Kafka) platform for IoT. The first component of Apache iota that is available is the Fey Engine. This Engine is an Actor based framework developed in Scala with heavy use of the Akka framework. It offers developers the ability to write their own 'third-party' components for use in orchestrating the movement of data in the iota platform. In this presentation we will show how to install the Fey Engine on a development machine, how to develop a component and how components can be put together to create an orchestrated solution. We will show Fey running on a RaspberryPi and explaining how Fey can run at different layers of a vertical IoT stack which includes a Mesos cluster all the way down to a RaspberryPi.
